You have heard many times that music is a multi-cultural language.Isn't that true? Many singers and musicians are famous people just because they bring forth music that touches the souls of people. Music had become so much of the lives of a person. Just as the devil want to use it to draw people way from God, as Christian, we want to use music to draw people nearer to God.

In fact, lots of people are first attracted by the music of the church even before the message of salvation. The presence of God is often first felt during a time of worship. Of course worship is not just a time of singing songs to the Lord; it should also be evidence in our daily lives in everything we do. But nevertheless musical worship is a very important aspect in any church meeting. People want to feel the presence of God touching them, many a time that touch is what we need to keep us going in our Christian walk.

Now that we know the importance of a Praise and Worship time in church, what element do we need to make this time what it should be in the area of musicians?

We know that what it needs is not just a skillful musician, because people communicate spirit to spirit. So if that person doesn't carry the Spirit of God, no matter how well he play, there will be no flow, there will be no different between going to a secular concert than attending a church service. So what we do need is a musician that loves God, who spends lots of personal time in God's presence communing with the almighty. One that knows the heart beat of God, one that longs after him, one that experiences a strong tangible presence of God in his own quiet time; for you can only lead others to a place where you've been before. You will be saying,"But that is what a worship leader or a minister of God does. We are just musician.”

So many a times we didn't realize the importance of a musician, especially during a cell group meeting. Many will say,"I'm just just playing guitar, to produce some accompany music so that the worship leader can sing together with the rest of the cell group people."No, you are not just playing guitar! You are co-leading the worship. I believe the guitarist in a cell group meeting play almost just an important role during Praise and Worship as the worship leader. It's you and the worship leader leading the worship. As much as the worship leader, you can help to build a strong spiritual atmosphere through the way you play. In my church, the role of a cell group guitarist is never given to a young believer, the cell group guitarist needs to be someone with a spiritual depth. It makes a big different when someone mature in Christ play the guitar for cell group meeting than a young believer, though they might be similar in skills.

Now the question is that although you might be a guitarist that love the Lord, seek his presence; but why does the praise and worship still not as powerful as it should be? How can a cell group guitarist bring a tangible presence of God when he plays the instrument?

I believe everything start with a change of mindset. First you need to know it can be done, that people can and will experience the tangible presence of God. Then the most important thing you need to know is this; YOU ARE A MINSTER OF GOD! Yes, you hear me right; most cell group guitarists fail to see himself as a minister of God. Until you start to see yourself as one, it will be difficult to flow with the Holy Spirit and to play with anointing. So as the word goes, you are ministering to people when you are playing music. You are suppose to do what a Minister of God preaching the word does, only that you do it in the area of music, of praise and worship.

Lots of churches call their music director or worship pastor as a worship minister. That's what they are really.

Let's compare between a minister preaching the word of God and a musician ministering in the area of music. There is much we can learn by observing how a minister of God works.

Minister preaching the Word---

1. Spend much time studying the Bible, seeking revelation from God.
2. Practice preaching in his own personal time to perfect his skill.
3. Have faith to believe every single person to be healed, touch, and change by God.
4. See the spiritual needs of people being met by the presence of God.
5. Listen closely to the Holy Spirit during preaching to go in the direction that God leads.
6. Spending lots of quality time in God's presence, building intimate relationship with Him.
7. Know that as you lift Jesus high, He will draw all men unto Himself.

Musician playing Music---
1. Spend much time studying music, being creative.
2. Practicing guitar in his own personal time to perfect his skill.
3. Have faith to believe every single person to be touch and lives change as you play music to the Lord.
4. See the spiritual needs of people being met by the presence of God.
5. Listen closely to the Holy Spirit during worship to go in the direction that God leads.
6. Spending lots of quality time in God's presence, building intimate relationship with Him.
7. Know that as you lift Jesus high, He will draw all men unto Himself.
Etc...

Don't belittle your role as a cell group guitarist. Once you see how important you are, you will start to do things differently. You will spend more time practicing, lingering in God's presence, drawing strength from God, wanting to be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit etc...because you are going to minister to others.

Though your skill isn't everything, but it's still important; how can you minister well if you are struggling to play the song? It's just like a minister very familiar in the Word, yet cannot preach, isn't it a waste? When David was chosen to play the harp before King Saul to rid of the distressing spirit, it is because he was skillful. (1 Sam 16:16 -18)

Never despised the day of small beginning, always take one step at a time, known that there's always a price to pay. God has already placed the talent in your hand, go all out the maximize it. Start to change your mindset today! Your action, behavior will start to change, you will begin to play with anointing when you begin to see Yourself, the Musician as a Minister of God.
